The Wheel Tower was created by L.J. Maasdam.
He had seen something similiar in Wisconsin and decided to create this. With the help of family members, it was erected in 1995, when he was 90 years old. There are over 200 metal wagon wheels in this 60 foot structure. L.J. Maasdam was a unique man when it came to inventions. He created the first digging (POW-R-DITCHER) machine that Vermeer Manufacturing Company, in Pella, Iowa started producing. He also built two round houses north of Pella. The family continues to operate Maasdam Sorghum Mills, which he started prodcution in 1926. The mill is powered by an early 1900's steam engine. The Maasdam Sorghum Mills is located 3 miles southwest of the Wheel Tower. If you are interested in the old days and would like to know more about L.J.'s life, there is a book called "The Man Behind the Mill".
The Wheel Tower is located 4 miles southwest of Interstate 80 Exit 179.
It is on S. 48th Ave E. It is north about 6 miles between Lynnville and Sully.
